Travel to Milan

Traveling in 2021 at the time of the Coronavirus may seem like a real undertaking, but with small tricks and a few precautions, we can continue to do what we have always loved. We take advantage of the times of the pandemic with the closure of borders and the mandatory quarantine for travel abroad, to travel to Italy and discover our cities. Unparalleled heritage of our territory.

Started with an article about Rome, I decided to publish a small collection of posts and information to travel alone in Italy.

Today we will talk about how to travel alone in Milan, I will explain the reasons for this choice, explaining some information on what to do in Milan and where to sleep during your stay in our “Capital of fashion”.

According to many, Milan is not a real tourist destination, and is often excluded and omitted from the list of Italian cities to visit. Milan is a dynamic city, in constant evolution, projected towards the future, a true shopping capital; but at the same time it also offers various possibilities and things to see and visit.

In addition to the already known Milan Cathedral, the Castello Sforzesco and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan offers many other places worth visiting, such as the new business center, called “Isola” and located north of the central station; where you can admire the famous buildings called “Bosco Verticale” and the southern area of the Duomo, where there are Corso Ticinese, the Navigli and many other things.

Justified as a choice, that of traveling alone in Milan, now we begin to understand what to do in Milan and where to sleep during your “exploratory” visit to the city.

Deciding to travel alone in Milan may be the right choice to discover the hidden beauties that a city like Milan often hides, but can offer. If you are wondering what to do in Milan and which monuments to visit during a trip, you will be spoiled for choice; churches, monuments, squares, contemporary architecture, a new and futuristic skyline, and famous museums await you.

In addition to the already known shopping places, the famous aperitifs, outdoor dinners, and the numerous starred restaurants, Milan, surprising you, will win your heart and soul, to the point of taking a look at the rental prices for a possible transfer (this is what happens to me every time I’m in Milan).

If you decide to travel alone in Milan, you will need to find an optimal accommodation to spend the night. You must know that the prices in Milan are much higher than the national average, and for a medium / low level single room it takes around one hundred euros.

Alternative and low cost solutions can be hostels with shared rooms, or guest houses or b & bs. During my solo travels in Milan, I tested different types of accommodations in some different areas; although my favorite sleeping area is around the Columns of San Lorenzo and Corso Ticinese.

Take a look at my list and you will find my top 3 of where to sleep in Milan:

Hotel Milano Navigli, is a nice 3-star hotel, with affordable prices and an enviable location. Recently built and furnished with good taste, it may be your ideal choice if you decide to combine the comfort of the hotel with a central location right on the dock and near Porta Ticinese. On the ground floor you will also find McDonald’s for your unexpected nighttime snacks;
B&B Hotel Milano, is a chain of small hotels and b & bs scattered in the center of Milan, which offers really advantageous prices and below the city average. Personally I stayed in the B&B Hotel Milano City Center Duomo which boasts an excellent position just a few meters from the Duomo as it is a new and well furnished structure;
Serendipity Rooms, here is another b & b worthy of evaluation located near the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore, a few hundred meters from the Duomo. Well furnished rooms in vintage-chic style with private bathroom and independent entrance.
Ostello Bello, an economic and low cost solution that you can find in Milan, is this. Excellent choice to save a few euros, meet new people and sleep in a clean, well furnished and well located environment.

Traveling alone in Milan could have a great advantage. Welcome to the homeland of the aperitif, many argue that this is the founding city of the aperitif; even if erroneously because the aperitif was born in the city of Turin. Here in Milan you will find thousands of different places, scattered throughout the city and with different characteristics, which make the aperitif moment their flagship.
From the chic restaurant with a panoramic terrace, to the small low cost chiringuito. You will choose the one that best suits your evening. The best areas for a good aperitif in Milan are those of the Navigli, that of the Island and that of Porta Romana.

The Duomo area is also very well stocked with bars, where you can have a nice panoramic aperitif at the famous “Aperol Terrace” or at the “Terrazza Duomo 21” a chic drink overlooking the Milan Cathedral.

Often in my articles I talk to you about how pleasant it is to travel and experience the local cuisine; even if you decide to travel alone in Milan, you can carry on this theory of mine. Milan offers a very good typical local cuisine, made of Milanese risotto, Milanese cutlet and even Milanese osso buco.

In Milan you will be spoiled for choice as to which venue to choose, from the restaurant of the famous chef Cracco at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, to the small intimate restaurants in Corso Ticinese; here are some of the places in Milan where I ate:

El Carnicero: met thanks to a friend of mine from Milan, this is a restaurant specializing in meat and more, located in Porta Romana. Well furnished, very intimate and nice place where you can also drink good red wine. Prices not very affordable but on average with those in Milan.
Triennale Terrace: located within Parco Sempione, this restaurant deserves a chance only for the view it can offer, as well as the food is really good and of the highest quality.
ATMosphere: it is perhaps the most characteristic of Milan’s restaurants. Romantic and intimate, you can only eat Milanese cuisine on a retro-style tram that runs through the streets of the city. Unfortunately it is necessary to book well in advance due to the great demand and the few places available. Go up in front of the Castle.
Temakinho: if, like me, you love sushi, this could be a good choice for you, present in three different areas of Milan, this restaurant offers fusion cuisine between sushi and Brazilian cuisine.
Street Food of Porta Ticinese: If you want to spend a fun evening without many frills, in the name of “cheap” food and good beer, I recommend all Corso di Porta Ticinese, starting from the intersection with Via Torino to Piazza Porta Ticinese. You will be spoiled for choice, among hundreds of foreign kitchens and small places to drink.

I hope that this article on how to travel alone in Milan, could have been of help to face or even just stimulate you to make your trip to Milan. Little information and advice on what to do in Milan or where to sleep during your stay in the fashion metropolis.

Milan is a wonderful city, too often ignored and underestimated for tourism purposes, but I assure you that here you will find everything useful and fun to spend your trip. I believe that in a moment full of restrictions like this, it should be exploited to get to know our beautiful country better.
